Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
